Only 40% of rural population in India has electricity for lighting. Efficient multifuel lanterns can solve this problem to a large extent. Also with frequent blackouts and brownouts there is a need for an alternative lighting source. NARI has therefore designed an extremely efficient multifuel lantern called ' NOORIE'. It is a pressurised lantern with rare-earth mantle lighting.

Features of NOORIE lantern:
- Can run on kerosine, ethanol(with slight modifications) and diesel
- Produces light output equivalent to that from a 100W electric bulb
- Consumes 40% less kerosine than the existing pressurised Petromax lamps
- Doubles up as a cooking stove for small quantities of food material.
- Is self cleaning, small in size, lightweight and very easy to light

NARI can transfer the complete technology for manufacturing of these lanterns to interested parties.

Cooking and lighting R&D strategy

Kerosene Lanstove
Recently a revolutionary concept of combining lighting and cooking capability in one device has been developed by our Institute. The device called Kerosene Lanstove (Trademark filed) produces very bright light and simultaneously cooks a complete meal for a family of 5. It also boils about 10 liters of water daily. Thus one device can cook, produce light and good clean drinking water.
